Tell us about what do you do.

Half of the week I am a freelance food writer/stylist and the other half I am the Garden to Table kitchen specialist for a special needs school in Otahuhu where I write recipes and take cooking classes for students using produce they've grown in the school garden. (If you haven't heard of Garden to Table, you should Google it – it's a pretty cool organisation.)

How did your journey of working with food come about?

I think I've just always loved cooking/food – when I was younger I had a few cookbooks that I absolutely loved and I would study them like mad. I used to make meals for my family and my older brothers would tease me and say that they tasted horrendous (they'd called my Chicken Chow Mein, "Chicken Chow Crap") but they recently confessed that everything was quite yummy. Last year when I worked for Toast and Dish magazine I fell even more in love with food writing and food magazines and I had some really cool experiences that prompted me to go freelancing. As for the children's cooking journey, I've been pretty interested in this area since uni and have always admired Garden to Table so working for them now is a bit of a dream come true!

What is it that you do?

I draw, using simple materials - pen and ink on paper mostly.

Which artists are you inspired by?

Marina Strocchi, Moonassi, Keith Haring, Basquiat, Matisse, David Shrigley - just to name a few. I generally find I’m most inspired by the people around me though, like my brother Gus Leunig and good friend Zoe Irving. I’m fascinated by the way everyday people do things (friends, family, neighbors, work mates) – and I find so many different people from all different fields inspiring in one way or another.

Where are you from? Where do you live now?

I’m from Oaxaca, Mexico and currently live in Los Angeles.

Tell us about what you do.

I’m an artist. Currently, I’m interested in photography and image making functions. I love the medium because it has so much potential and it’s so young compared to other forms of art making. I see my work as dealing with a lot with distribution and hierarchy of objects. The images I make I think are very nostalgic and trying to represent certain instances where I forget I’m in Los Angeles and I feel like I’m back home. I also love reading and listening to music so I’ve tried writing and making music but that’s a little rusty.
